Uproot
Where it began… "Uproot".
Rewind to 2018, I’m sitting in my apartment in Tampa, Florida reflecting on the direction of Constructing Infinity. It had sadly been 3 years since my last release. I didn’t know what the future of the project would hold, but didn’t want to give it up.
A spark… I was messing around with a picking exercise that sounded.. WAY too musical to stay a picking exercise. You’ll see me expand on that in the De-Constructing Infinity video. From that point I wanted to turn it into a full on musical idea. The flow wasn’t right, so I slowed it down and messed around with giving the riff some “space” and room to speak for itself.
Uproot unravelled quickly… way more quickly than I expected it to. I wanted to make something different than the past iterations of Constructing infinity. By that I mean a dip into more traditional songwriting. I heard some of my favorite artists creating some really inspiring stuff that was a lot more digestible.
I still have a soft spot in my heard for the Stonewall and Endure EPs, but there’s only so much of that overly progressive style you can churn out before it gets old. Uproot effortlessly (key word) turned into the most accessible song I had written during the process.
The groundwork and fundamentals of Constructing Infinity are still there. There are heavy riffs, big time ambience, and blast beats in this song, but the intention that I set for this song was to appeal to people beyond those who play guitar.
I was so encouraged by the pre production that I decide to approach my long time graphic designer and good friend, Austin Peters (Outrun the Sunlight) for a rebrand and artwork for a singles collection. We hopped on a zoom the next day and talked through ideas.
We were going to re-brand Constructing Infinity and pretty much start over.
Change is constant, and uprooting symbolizes not only change, but completely changing the current state to be something entirely new. From here, it was only natural to name the song.. Uproot.
Here’s an early iteration of the song. As you might notice, the solo is changed. Candidly I thought the original version sounded too much like Intervals.
